I was an avid exhibitor in the all breed ring at that time.  I had shown other breeds up until that point.  Bumper was the first german shepherd I showed in conformation, but he was not my first german shepherd.  My first german shepherd was a sable obedience dog named Damion.  I got him in 1986.  Damion was the reason why I fell in love with the breed.

In the mid 90’s my dogshowing activity ceased.  I was not very active while I was in college.  I was working in the ICU/emergency medicine unit at Purdue Veterinary teaching hospital.  I taught senior students, interns, residents, and tech students emergency procedures.

In the late 90’s I got involved in pugs for a brief period.  One of my former high school classmates wanted to get into showing dogs.  I mentored him for a couple years.  I helped him select his foundation bitch.  Ch.Celestial Neu Star Attraction ROM (“Emma”).  Emma became an ROM from her 1st litter producing 5 champions.  Two of her progeny went on to be in the top ten pugs all breeds.  Jason Huff of Mystic Pug fame continues to be one of the leaders in his breed to this day.  http://www.mysticpug.com

I moved to Ohio for graduate school in 2001 where I met Randall Seaton.  I wanted to try a different breed so I selected the Doberman.  Randall and I would show and breed Dobermans under the name Arayvus.  He is still showing a few dogs out of one our bitches Marienburg-Arayvus Heavensgait (“Tapanga”).  I also met Mr. Jeff Pyle at this time.  He made me realize how much I missed the german shepherd.

I moved  to California in 2005 and have been in shepherds full time ever since.  I haven’t kept or shown many of my own dogs.  Most of my time is devoted to client dogs.

Below you will find a list of my dogs since 2005:

Pedigree

I have been asked what my type is.  I would have to say it is similar in dogs and bitches.  However, I will refer to examples of both to give you an idea.  Being that I am classically Midwest trained big sidegait is a huge deal for me.  However, the west coast has taught me type is very important.  My pet peeves include bad backs, bad temperament, level bites, washed out pigment, and marginal sidegait.  I will forgive light eyes, wide ear sets, close coated, a little length, and a little dirty going away in otherwise superior quality specimens.  So I would say the males that closely resemble my type are:

Ch.Schneiderhof’s OJ of Madeira ROM

SelCh.Kinni V Oz v Kubistraum ROM

Ch.Schokrest Frequent Flyer ROM

SelCh.Scherzar’s Jordan

FV/MVSelCh.Houston of Wildwood ROM

SelCh.Windwalker’s LeRoy Brown ROM

Ch.Pinebeaches Stars N Stripes ROM

Ch.Earth, Wind, & Fire of Edan CD TC ROM

BIM Am/SelCanCh. Woodside's High Voltage

The girls that closely resemble my type would be:

SelCh.Jantar’s China Lake v Witmer

Ch.Faithrock Caralon I Get Around

SelCh.Rivendell’s Start the Commotion

SelCh.Ken-Delaine’s Avia ROM

SelCh.Final Fantasy of Nordlicht ROM

We have really diverged from this type of dog in the U.S. in recent years.  I have always loved a stunning male with a big stride, but they are really hard to come by.  If I have to choose type or motion, the motion will always come first.  Historically, there have been stud dogs that have provided us with consistent type.  There have been few that have provided us with spectacular movers every litter.  Jerry Guzman has always told me the mother is the most important part of a breeding.  I can see that, but in breeding I feel that knowing what is behind her is much more important than evaluating her based on phenotype.  In summary, I am looking for dark, plush, topline, good crouped, low stationed dogs with a good back and BIG SIDEGAIT.
